Privacy

Last updated 10 October 2026

In short

Your file is processed and then deleted straight away. It is never stored, shared, or used for anything else. DataWrangler doesn't use cookies, analytics or advertising.

Who runs DataWrangler

DataWrangler is run by Lee Hart. For any question about privacy, email privacy@datawrangler.org.

What happens to your file

  • Your file is sent over an encrypted connection, to servers run by Google Cloud in London.
  • It is saved briefly in a temporary folder while it's read and cleaned, and that folder is deleted as soon as your preview or download is ready. This usually takes under a second.
  • Each time the preview updates, or you download, your browser sends the file again. DataWrangler doesn't keep a copy between these.
  • Your file's contents are never logged, copied, shared or used for anything else.

Error reports

If something goes wrong, a report is sent to Sentry, which stores it in the European Union, so the problem can be found and fixed. A report includes the type of error, where in DataWrangler's code it happened, which page was being used, and which version of DataWrangler was running.

Reports never include your file, any of its contents, the error's message (which can quote data), your IP address, or other personal details. They are kept for up to 30 days.

Technical logs

Like most websites, DataWrangler's hosting keeps short-term logs of requests, such as the time, the page asked for, the type of browser, and how long it took. These may include your IP address. They are used only to keep the site running and secure, and Google Cloud deletes them after 30 days.

All traffic passes through Cloudflare, which protects the site from attacks and abuse (for example, by limiting how quickly files can be sent). To do this, Cloudflare processes your IP address.

Cookies and tracking

DataWrangler doesn't set cookies, and doesn't use analytics, advertising or tracking of any kind.

Why this information is used

Error reports and technical logs are used because DataWrangler has a legitimate interest in keeping the site working, secure and free of abuse. They are kept only as long as needed for that.

Your rights

You can ask what information about you is held, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted, by emailing privacy@datawrangler.org. Since DataWrangler doesn't keep your files and doesn't know who you are, there's usually very little to find.

If you have a concern, please email privacy@datawrangler.org first, so it can be put right. If you're still unhappy, you can complain to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Changes

If DataWrangler starts handling information differently (for example, if accounts or saved files are added), this page will be updated first, and the date at the top will change.
